The JT Smith Memorial Race was the last one on the program. Here are some shots of Jim's family with his blanket, which was awarded to the horse that won the race.

Can't remember the horse's name, but I cashed in a $2 ticket on him. After the race, all family present crowded into the winner's circle for the official picture. It was a HUGE crowd of Gatewoods and Smiths. Kris is working on making the JT Smith Memorial an annual race. (Shirley, this coud be your chance to get into a race photo.) I hadn't been to Horsemens Park before - we had a fun day. I started with $10,bought a $2 ticket on every race and came home with $9.60. Not bad, huh?

An Easter Birthday

According to an article in the newspaper, the Sunday that will be Easter each year is determined by the moon and Passover and the Spring equinox. The latest it can occur in the year is April 25th, so this year came pretty close to that when Easter fell on the 24th. Why? you may ask am I noting this. Well the last time Easter fell on its latest possible date of the year -- April 25th -- our sister was born.

We went to Mesa to meet some friends from Carroll & Norfolk and play golf at the Arizona Resort. While we were sitting in the bar waiting for our t-time a familiar face walked in. It was Richard Svendson. I said "Hey, Rich." Alan Nies was with him. He said "my sister is outside." so I went out to visit with Sharon a little bit. Rich's wife, Cynthia Moseman, was also with them. After we played we went in to have supper and they all were in there again. Talked to them some more. They told us Cynthia's mom, Loralee, would be joining them for supper. Loralee has remarried to Jim Wickstrom from Oakland. Did talk to her a little while also.
You just never know when you will meet someone from the past.

I wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and I hope you have enjoyed your day.

The 5K Run To Feed The Hungry was great and we finished in just over an hour. There were about 30,000 people out on a cold (for California), bright day.

David asked what I am thankful for today. First my family--all of you. My various circles of friends who help me enjoy my life. The comforts of my life, my health. The YMCA for Yoga, tai chi and pilates. The dance studios for dancing.

I could go on with this list and perhaps you are all thankful that I will end here.

Hike to Miners Falls

We hiked a one mile round trip trail into the cool autumn world of the northern mixed hardwood forest in the UP of Michigan. At the end of the trail were 77 steps leading down to the viewing platform at the falls where Miners River cascades some 60 feet over a sandstone outcrop. Note the big stick that Jerry carries. And he says he is not afraid to use it on knuckleheads and bears! Jerry hiked halfway to the falls and stood guard for us.

Unexpected Visitors at Work

The most amazing thing happened today at work.

A few days ago, they came and took our copy machine away because we are getting a new one. (Ok, that’s not the amazing part… duh.) Anyway, if a customer wants just one copy of one page, we can do it on our fax machine. So today, a lady came in wanting to copy the 1902 marriage certificate of her grandparents, Emily Larson and Eric Rhodman. As I was watching it inch its way out of the fax machine, I saw the signatures of the two people who signed as their witnesses: Mr. A.G. Anderson and Mrs. A.G. Anderson. Yes, it was clearly Grandma's and Grandpa’s. I’d recognize those signatures anywhere. What a treat to run into Grandma and Grandpa in the middle of an otherwise uneventful workday!

Janell's pictures and a post by her friend Cliff got me to thinking of the horses I have known.
My claim to fame in horse racing is that I had my picture taken in a winner's circle
when I was about 5. Grandma G. was holding me in her arms and all you can see is the top of my head. Janell may have that picture in her collection.

The first horses other than the thoroughbreds of Gramps were Belle & Maude. They were Dad's workhorses, probably Belgians. After work, Dad would take the harnesses off and 4 little kids would get a ride. Two on each horse with legs spread so far apart it was almost as if we were sitting on a flat surface. Myrna, do you have this picture?

Cousins Jim & Paul Dee owned Ribbon. Every time we would visit I would always hope I would get a ride. Usually it was bareback with cousin Jim. Ribbon was a very nice accommodating horse.

During the winter months Gramps pony, Prince, would come live in our pasture. Prince was a pretty black & white very spirited horse. Only Dad was allowed to ride him. One time he tried to jump a fence and cut his leg up pretty bad, but it healed up ok if I remember right.

Another time our landlord, a lawyer who lived in Fremont, boarded his daughter's horse. Don't remember its name. The daughter would come ride it occasionally.

There was a horse named Bonnie that lived with us for awhile. Don't remember if she belonged to the landlord or what. She was very old and very slow. The brothers seemed to be able to ride her ok, but if I got on her no matter how hard I kicked and begged she would just stand still or head for the barn.

Our friends and neighbors, the Krogers, had a horse named Suzie. One day I took a little ride down the road on her by myself and was doing just fine until Jim came up behind me on the tractor and revved up the engine. This scared Suzie and she took off at a full gallop toward the barn. Luckily the door was shut and she had to stop or I may not be here to tell you about it.

The last horse I rode was Bubba. Bubba is a very nice gentle horse that even a 2-year old can ride. One day about 3 years ago we took the 4 grandkids who have never been on a horse before to ride Bubba. At the time they were 8, 10, 12 & 13. After some lessons from Janell and taking turns on a rope and later on their own each one rode around the pen at a trot with no help from the teacher. Thanks for a very memorable day, Janell. BTW Jacob never did get his other Grandpa talked into boarding a horse for him.

Watching the thoroughbreds run is still very exciting, but I don't get to do it very much. Except during the triple crown races on TV.

I had my reasons for trying to keep this out of the blog and strictly through email, the most prominent one being how dysfunctional this can appear to anyone reading it.

Here's my latest great idea. Sunday, December 27th, soups and pizza in the afternoon, if it snows we can have a slumber party. The gift exchange game same as last year.

From all the emails flying back and forth, it looks like a weekend in January will work for everyone, except the 9-10. Tammie, Sue and I all have conflicts that weekend. Shall we try for the 16th at Shirley's? Chantelle and Robby might be able to come, let's be sure and send her an email as soon as we nail down the date and time. Shall we do the gift exchange again? I think it's fun.

This passing little 2-decker boat begins to give a scale of the glacier. Google says it is a mile wide, 180 feet high, and 400 feet deep in the water!

Glacier Bay National Park

During our first night on the cruise ship we left Skagway and cruised along and out of the Lynn Canal into the Icy Strait, so that when we woke up we would be entering Glacier Bay NP off of the strait. So when we got up and got outside on our 'porch' we saw our first ice bergs that had calved off of some glacier. They were pretty small calves though. About an hour later we met a substantial glacier name Margerie Glacier.

Our Cruise Ship

We boarded our cruise ship in Skagway, Alaska in mid afternoon after we got off the White Pass Yukon Railcar ride down the coastal mountains (see a coastal mountain stream at Midtown). But since the cruise ship was not scheduled to leave until 6 pm, of course we had time to deboard and go shopping in Skagway. Two other cruise ships were at dock, so many, many others joined us or us them.

I was going to take Mick to visit a trail ride today, but when I got there to pick him up, he didn't want to go - said he wasn't feeling well. He seemed a little disoriented. I've seen him like this before and suspect he's having TIAs. He'll probably be fine tomorrow. I'll be going back on Wednesday.
