T-Day

A non-traditional dinner was served at our house. The main course was capon. I had to almost laugh when the girl in the meat department at Walmart answered my question, "Do you have any capons?", with "Is that some kind of pork." Not wanting to explain that it was a castrated rooster, I told her it was a rooster. She said it would probably be with the poultry. (They didn't have any). Did get the last one at Hy Vee. The only traditional food was mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie. Everyone in our family is really watching their weight so tried to keep that in mind when getting ready. There was a variety of salads, lettuce, jello, fruit, and broccoli. Not the traditional green bean casserole, but a green bean and carrot with bacon bits dish that has become kind of a staple at our gatherings because it is usually all gone. Cindy made a mock chocolate cheesecake pie that was really good and Tammie had brought the pumpkin pie. Joe brought a plate of deer sausage and cheese which also disappeared.
Some of us played a fun game of Apples to Apples which anyone can play. Jacob and Kendra had a hot football game going outside. Jaydee and Joe joined in for the "final quarter." Abby brought her dvd that her Aunt kristie had made for her confirmation last spring. Joe & Angie updated us on their new house. Cindy updated us on her plans with her youth group trip. Tammie told us a little about her mentoring child.
Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday.

Well it’s Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday season again already. Seems like the older I get the faster the time flies by!

I do check the Gatewood news blog from time to time to see what you are all up to. I will attempt to post this Holiday greeting/news
letter on that site, please let me know if it worked..

All here is well. We moved into our new house last April. After almost two years in that dome the new house is an absolute pleasure.
Kris’s mom Edith is here with us and she is doing great. We all seem to end up in the sun room every morning for coffee and to read the
newspaper. Now that the sun is low in the south we need some sort of blinds on the windows in that room. Once the sun comes over the tree
tops it shines right in our eyes. We have the dome rented to a single woman who needed a place for her pets. A couple of cats, 4 dogs,
3 lamas and 10 alpacas. It’s kind of like having our own petting zoo, and we don’t have to feed or care for the critters.

I have not really worked much since we moved in to the new house. I have a contract to build a big house for a nice young couple
just a few miles from here, but we are still trying to wrap up the paper work to get started. We should be able to get started about the
first of the year, you know, the dead of winter! Oh well it won’t be the first time I’ve had to work in the winter. And I can’t imagine
that we will have another winter like last year, can’t have two of them in a row.

Kris’s son Phil and his wife Trisch and sons Zane and Elie come out from Boulder almost every week end. It is great to have a
place where the boys seem to enjoy coming to so much. It is also great for Edith to be able to spend so much time with them.
When they were all in Calif. they lived about 20 minutes apart, and when Edith moved here to Colorado leaving those kids behind was
the hardest part for her. When the kids moved out here they really made our day.

I have my season ski pass again this year. Sure hope the ski resorts open up someday. I mostly go with Phil and the grandsons so
that gives us all something to enjoy during the winter months. We did get our first snow yesterday, 2 whole inches. Before that the
temperature has been in the 70s for weeks.

Dian and Al were our first guests in the new house. They came out on the first of May and stayed a week. We did have to share them some
with Al’s daughters who both live near here, but that was ok. We had one big party here at the house with our kids and grand kids and
Al’s kids and four grand kids and all had a good time. Al was having some health problems awhile back but now seems to have everything
under control and is doing great. They are still living the retired life in Groveland Calif. Just outside of Yosemite Park. They took
a cruise on the Mediterranean last summer. They started in Venice Italy to Istanbul to Athens Greece to Rome and on to Barcelona Spain.
Sounds like they had the trip of a lifetime, we were very envious. Al has a ski boat now and they spend a lot of time on Pine Mountain
lake with friends and neighbors. They just got high speed internet access. There e-mail address is Dogaroni@sonnet.com

With all the free time I’ve had lately waiting to get this next project started I have gotten back into our genealogy. I joined
a couple research web sits and have found a few documents with dates pertaining to Grandma and a few other Swedish relatives. I am
wondering if any of you may be able to help answer some questions that have come up.

#1 I have Grandma’s parents listed as Erik Olsson Morell and Gut Majt Larsdotter with sisters Majit, Margit and Vendela Malaine.
I found a death certificate in Sweden for a Margit Leonardz F Morell with the same birth year as Grandmas sister Margit b. 1876.
Does this make her related to David Leonardz who I have a copy of a 1941 obituary for? Weather she is related or not, who is
David Leonardz? I have no idea!

#2 I know that Grandma traveled with cousin Karin to Washington to meet up with Grandmas half sisters Anna and Karin. I found
all of there emigration records to the U.S. But after that I can find nothing on sisters Anna and Karin. I suspect they got married
and changed their last names. Does anyone have an idea who they may have married?
Also, in Grandmas letter to cousin Karin’s daughters Ruth and Elsie, she states that Cousin Karin married Louis Sparre. I found
Washington state census records for Louis Sparre listing children with the names Ruth and Elsie but lists the wife as Carrie.
Anybody got any idea what cousin Karins full name was? Immigration records show that traveling on the same boat and from the same
place and heading to the same place, Portland as Grandma was a Karin Ersdotter, a Trot-Karin Ersdotter, a Karin Frot and a Karin Trot
all born 1870. I did find a death certificate for a Karin Sparre who died in 1946 Washington.
I hope I haven’t overwhelmed anyone with these requests for information. I just find all this very fascinating and like a big computer
game, trying to figure out who is who and where they all ended up.

Hope you all have a great Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday season, write when you get a chance.

Virgil- So good to hear from you! Sounds like things are going well for you. David Leonardz was Margit's husband. And I believe 'Carrie' is a nickname for Karin. I don't know what Karin's last name was before she married Louis Sparre.

Yes, "a good time was had by all" at Mom's. Kendra was covered in grass and dirt stains, when all was said and done. She's hoping it's not too cold or muddy to play football at recess today. Saturday, she asked if she could play hockey. OMG what have I got here!?

Virgil, I agree with Janell, "Carrie" is probably a nickname for Karin. I believe I have a copy of the letter you are referring to (thanks to Myrna). You are braver than I am...trying to sort through all the Swedish surname mess. If it's not too much trouble, would love to have any information you find, to add to my records.

Great.
I haven't figured out where Janell's blog is, I guess, since I see that she commented on this one.
Oh, well...
I didn't know what a capon was until reading this post.
I am smarter now than I was previously.
Thanks for expanding my vocabulary.

:-)

It would be easiest to mail you copies of the print-outs from the info I found. If you send your address I will get them in the mail to you.
